Finding better treatments for brain-injured patients is its own reward, says Nathaniel Mayer, MD, Director, MossRehab and Albert Einstein Medical Center Institute for Mobility Evaluation and Treatment about his BOTOX® and spasticity research.
For patients with problems using muscles in their limbs or neck area, Dr. Mayer administers multiple BOTOX botulinum toxin type A injections into affected muscle groups. However, he can’t exceed 600 BOTOX units per patient due to possible side effects such as developing toxin immunoresistance. “Because of the limits, we compromise on which muscle groups we treat. Usually, there are more muscles to treat than there is BOTOX capacity,” he said. “I’m looking for a technique that uses smaller dosages yet still proves effective.”
