Thomas Strax, MD Distinguished Clinician 2003

Dr. Strax is Vice President for Medical Rehabilitation and Medical Director of JFK Johnson Rehabilitation Institute as well as professor and Chairman at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. In 2005, Dr. Strax received the AAPM&R Frank H. Krusen Award. He has concentrated on pediatric and geriatric rehabilitation. Through his work in both arenas, he discerned similarities among the two groups that, when incorporated into rehabilitation programs, enhanced success. “These populations tend to have the same issues: they’re in transition and suffer from a loss of control,” he explains. “When patients choose goals and even individual exercises, it motivates them for the arduous task of rehabilitation and often alleviates emotional distress as well.”

Dr. Strax contributed his skills in patient care, education and scholarship to MossRehab from 1971 to 1985 as staff physiatrist, Medical Director and Acting Medical Director. He views MossRehab as a guiding force in the field of rehabilitation. “With its team approach, research, commitment to family involvement and public education, MossRehab is helping to pragmatically shape the future of our field, keeping people in the community longer rather than entering long-term care institutions.”
