Leon Reinstein, MD Distinguished Clinician 1998

Dr. Reinstein has been the Medical Director of the comprehensive inpatient rehabilitation unit and the Associate Physiatrist-in-Chief at Sinai Hospital in Baltimore for 20 years. Throughout his career, he has been heavily involved in organizational medicine at the national level.

A resident and then chief resident at MossRehab from 1970 to 1973, Dr. Reinstein cites Moss for providing not only an excellent foundation in the field, but the department leadership, mentors and role models who guided him into the national arena through encouragement, mentorship and example. “National efforts are particularly critical today to advocate the continuing need for inpatient rehabilitation,” he says. Inpatient rehab for complex spinal cord and brain injuries will probably continue, he adds, but such services for conditions like total joint replacement and polydisease are particularly threatened by reimbursement concerns. “Our task is to show the government that limiting or eliminating inpatient rehab for these conditions costs Medicare and Medicaid more in the long run.”
