Chairman’s Message

We are honored that for the 16th year, MossRehab has been recognized as one of the nation’s leading rehab facilities in U.S.News & World Report.  We know this recognition is based on recommendations submitted by the country’s top physiatrists, like you. I want to take this opportunity to thank you for your support of MossRehab.

We believe our commitment to research is one factor in this consistent recognition.  MossRehab is one of only a few U.S. rehab hospitals to house an internationally recognized research institute dedicated to the study and rehabilitation of cognitive and mobility problems.  Since opening under the leadership of Dr. John Whyte, it has embarked on a variety of projects, including a study of the effect of zolpidem on minimally conscious patients.

Some of our most recent research has also focused on Lokomat, the robot assisted device that is used to help patients regain ambulation, and Reo Therapy, which facilitates the type of intensive repetitive practice that is believed to promote neuroplasticity and improved motor control after CNS damage.

In addition to employing the best current technologies, we aim to be a leader in helping evaluate the next generation of rehabilitation technologies.  Announced earlier this year, MossRehab is the exclusive U.S. site for clinical trials of ReWalkTM, the first commercially viable device that enables paraplegics to stand, walk, and climb stairs.  When the research trials are completed, regulatory approvals may be granted and ReWalk could be on the market in the next 24 months.

Leadership in technology, education and research is impressive, but success in patient outcomes that is an indisputable measure of a world-class rehabilitation hospital.  That is why we are proud that MossRehab’s FY 2009 Functional Independence MeasureTM (FIM) scores exceeded regional and national averages for every type of disability treated.

MossRehab’s leadership in medical research and rehabilitation treatments enable us to deliver optimal functional outcomes and an overall positive experience for patients. On behalf of MossRehab, and our patients, I again thank you for your continued recognition and support.

Sincerely,

Alberto Esquenazi, MD
Chair and Professor, Department of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation
Chief Medical Officer, MossRehab
