Technology Facilitates Continued Long-Term Aphasia Recovery

Computer-assisted speech therapy can lead to significant improvements in word retrieval, sentence structuring and other key communication skills in patients with aphasia, even when it is initiated long after the precipitating event. Testing and clinical studies with tools developed in association with the MossRehab Research Institute have already demonstrated impressive results, and ongoing research suggests even greater promise through the use of hand-held devices.

How SentenceShaper™ Structures Speech

SentenceShaper utilizes simple shapes and sound cues in combination with text to help aphasic patients compile and organize verbal content. While some metalinguistic ability is required, users do not have to produce full sentences regularly, recognize morphological errors or retain reading skills to achieve success. SentenceShaper provides a simplified interface that enables the user to record spoken words or fragments and organize them into cohesive units that can be played for listeners or used as “scripts.”

Demonstrated Benefits

Studies with SentenceShaper demonstrate significant benefits. In one trial with eight participants, improvements over baseline were seen in measures of syntax, word selection and rate of communication. SentenceShaper is also being evaluated for use with a hand-held device that will enable patients to play back the messages they have created in “real-life” situations.

Anecdotal Evidence

Anecdotal evidence reaffirms the benefits of SentenceShaper. A report from the Adler Aphasia Center in Maywood, New Jersey notes how SentenceShaper is helping patients regain the ability to form complete, informative sentences and return to more active, productive social and professional lives. In one notable case, SentenceShaper helped a user run for and win a seat as City Councilman.

Rebuilding Vocabulary with MossTalk Words®

Currently on hiatus for a compatibility upgrade, MossTalk Words is expected to become available again soon. This tool was designed to address two common underlying deficits associated with word retrieval difficulties in aphasic patients: semantic and phonological processing.

Matching Module

Naming Module

The cued naming module uses a hierarchy of spoken or written cues, such as first letter, fill-in phrase or description to facilitate word retrieval.

Both modules include 422 words organized into three basic categories and can be run with a standard or custom interface to accommodate different skill levels and needs. A results feature provides feedback within both treatment sessions and individualized practice sessions.
