The MossRehab Driving Program, one of the longest running programs of its kind in the country, is marking 30 years of helping senior citizens and adults with physical and cognitive disabilities such as stroke, TBI and amputation regain driving skills and independence. For disabled individuals, the program also offers auxiliary services such as identifying appropriate vehicle modifications to accommodate driving limitations and developing effective methods of entering, exiting and caring for the vehicle.
A four-person staff composed of driving instructors and occupational therapists with decades of experience select from a number of different control systems when working with disabled drivers. According to Program Director Dan Basore, there are seven vehicles for training, including one of just a few Scott Driving System vans in the country. The Scott Driving System, based on Ford E-250 Econoline Window Vans, features single-lever driving systems that control all driving functions – steering, gassing and braking – with the hands rather than the feet. The program also maintains vehicles with voice recognition capabilities and powered headrests that control vehicle functions like lighting and turn signals.
Serving over 1,000 people annually, the program maintains offices in Jenkintown, Pennsylvania; Woodbury, New Jersey; and Wilmington, Delaware.
